Multi-grafted citrus treeWill the trees be suitable for my climate?

Yes! There are different varieties of fruits to suit different climates. Warm/temperate climates can grow stonefruits, citrus and tropical apple types, while cold climates can grow all four tree types.

Is there special care needed for multi-graft trees?

Yes! While the tree is young, it's most important that the grafted branches grow at an even rate. It is necessary to cut back any vigorous growing branches and keep the tree balanced otherwise, the faster growing branches deprive the slower growing branches of nutrients. It is also necessary to remove any shoots that are growing from the rootstock below ground level or from the main central trunk of the tree.

Can I grow the trees in pots?

Yes, planting can take place at anytime of the year. Please read "Planting Out" details on your Care Instruction leaflet you received with the tree. You can start with a pot 18" wide and deep (or larger). Make sure a good potting mix is used or soil and fertiliser (organic and old is best) combination. You can use a slow release fertiliser as well. Top up annually with organic fertiliser and mulch. A good layer of mulch on top helps prevent the stress of top feeder roots drying out and keeps them cool. Keep moist at all times. Stone fruit

Repot every 2 years, during winter when the tree is dorment and annual pruning is taking place (Citrus after fruiting, in winter). Change soil and check root system. If roots are wrapping themselves around the pot in circular form, then either replant in a larger pot with roots spread out. If you are wanting to maintain pot size, then cut off the circular roots, at the same time pruning the top to balance, then repot.

Full instructions on maintaining pot size is explained simply in the Care Leaflet that accompanies the tree. Fruit size is not reduced when growing in a pot, only the tree size, which is determined by the size of the pot.

What about cross-pollination?

Whatever variety is required for cross-pollination has been grafted onto the tree.

Can I choose the fruits that I want?

Yes! We always ask you to list the fruits that you would like to have, in the order of their importance to you. Beginning with your first choice and working down your list, we choose the best trees that we have to suit your requirements. We can't guarantee to supply every fruit that you list because there are many different combinations.
